Bhivpuri Waterfall, Karjat

Peth Fort, Karjat
Peth Fort, also called as Kotligad, is one of the major tourist attractions near Karjat. The fort is built on a cone-shaped hill from where the Western Ghats, Wandre Khind Pass and Bhimashankar can be seen. The fort derives its name from its location in the Peth village which is situated at the foothills of the fort.
An idol of Lord Bhairoba is enshrined in a small cave near the fort. The fort is in ruins but water cisterns near the entrance of the cave can still be seen. It is believed that the fort was constructed by the Marathas to safeguard their kingdom from enemies. Small rooms, used by the Marathas to store ammunition, can be seen inside the fort.
A vertical tunnel inside the fort leads to the top of the fort, from where the Sahyadri range and the Konkan plains can be seen. The Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary and the Nethersole Dam are located in the vicinity of the Peth Fort.
Jain Temple, Karjat
The Jain temple is located on the Mahavira Peth Road that leads to the Karjat railway station. The entrance of this temple is decorated by carved stone figures that symbolise the Jain faith. The stairs leading to the temple are decorated using colourful stones and patterns on white marble.
The presiding deity of this temple is Lord Arishtha Neminath, the 22nd Jain Tirthankar. The upper level of the main sanctum is dedicated to Lord Shantinath, the 16th Jain Tirthankar.
Bahiri Cave, Karjat
The Bahiri Cave, near the Ulhas Valley, is situated 600 m above main sea level. According to legend, the Lord of Bahiri lives inside the cave. Several Hindu devotees visit this cave on the occasion of Chaitra Purnima.
Kondana Caves, Karjat
Kondana Caves are rock-cut ancient Buddhist caves, located at an hour’s trek away from the Kondana village. According to archaeologists, these caves date back to the 2nd century BC. Inside the cave, several stupas, chaityas, sculptures and viharas can be seen.
The stone carvings on the octagonal pillars of the caves depict men and women in dancing poses. In the 1900s, due to an earthquake, the floor and stupas of the caves were damaged. To maintain the sanctity of the place, smoking and liquor consumption are strictly prohibited inside the caves as well as in the nearby areas.
Kondeshwar Temple, Karjat
Kondeshwar temple is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple has been constructed in the old Hemadpanthi style of architecture. The main sanctum of the temple is surrounded by numerous small shrines.
Mahashivratri is the main festival celebrated in this temple. Monsoon is not an ideal time to visit the shrine because the rocky terrain leading to the temple becomes slippery.
Navra Navri, Karjat
Navra Navri is located 2,011 ft above sea level in the Western Ghats in Karjat. The site has numerous rocky peaks that are about 15 m to 25 m high.
